How did the Romans collected the animals for their games?
Reading the David Drake novel Killer made me interested in just how the
Romans collected the animals for their games (which given the scale
involved must have been a massive undertaking) yet for such a
fascinating subject, there doesn’t seem to be much info out there. Can
anyone recommend any good sources?
Has any one ever writen any books or articles on this subject. It would seem odd if they have not, as this seems to be as big an enterprise as the fur trade was in North America
The Roman Empire was huge, and included territory that supported a wide variety of animals. Teams of trackers were sent out, and animals were captured (usually with nets or in traps). Large bounties were paid for certain types of animals, and those who specialized in capturing and transporting animals could become quite wealthy. A large percentage of captured animals didn’t make it to the games, however, as they died due to injury, malnutrition, or other mistreatment on the journey.
