The Castle Frankenstein
We have all heard of Frankenstein, the monster, and his bride. Immortalised by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein was the scientists who created the now internationally recognized, big green monster (although this was more thanks to Boris Karloff and Universal Studios). Not the hulk, the one with the bolt through his neck.
But where did she get the inspiration from? Frankenstein castle is a ruined castle in Germany, once home to the barons von Frankenstein. Its most famous resident, Joseph Conrad Dippel was a well regarded alchemist, but was accused of stealing body parts from the local cemeteries to further his scientific experiments. And there you have it. The stories of the famous dweller got to Mary Shelly, when on a boat trip down the Rhone, and a masterpiece was born.
Mary Shelley, just nineteen when she wrote the literary bestseller, has by no doubt brought fame to the area. But Darmstadt, located about half an hour from the international hub of Frankfurt, has a lot to thanks for the castle. It was abandoned as a residence in the late 1600’s, and was later used as a temporary prison. The small tower and distinctive chapel were said to be haunted, and it was left desolate until it was done up, after the gothic novel era.
Darmstadt is a pretty little village, synonymous with the majority of villages in this region of Germany. Historically, it was the first city on the whole of Germany to force Jewish shops to close during the holocaust, and was mostly destroyed by British bombing in 1944. There are plenty of unique little hotels and restaurants, and it sees a large amount of tourists each year.
