A shopaholic’s guide to Paris
Paris and fashion go hand-in-hand and the very name is associated with chic and fashionable types. Paris is a self-confessed style capital and therefore a mecca for chic clothing boutiques, top class department stores and traditional flea markets. From haute couture to emerging new talents, Paris really has it all when it comes to fashion.
If you really want to soak up the Parisian style first hand then you could book a trip to the French capital during Paris Fashion Week, held in March each year. As would be expected, this is a glamorous affair as the Carrousel de Louvre hosts the final stint of a world-wide fashion tour.
Designers display their latest creations and collections via runway shows and the city is literally brimming over with fashion fans so it is advisable to get yourself tickets if you want to catch any of the shows first hand.
When it comes to perusing and purchasing the latest fashions there are several different areas in Paris to visit. Look out for Avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement if designer threads are what you’re looking for.
The boutiques of the major designers are mainly located in this area and Yves Saint-Laurent, Christian Dior and Versace are just a few names to grace the streets. Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is another prime location to visit for designer delights.
Bon Marché, Galeries Lafayettes, Samaritaine, Printemps, and Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville (BHV) are just a few of the great department stores that form part of the history of Paris and offer a mind boggling array of items for sale. Shopping helpers, translators, currency exchanges, and tax-free shopping are all useful benefits available to the shopping tourist.
For youthful designs head to the Halles neighbourhood, la Place des Victoires and the boutiques of the Marais where you will be truly spoilt for choice.
Rue du Cherche-Midi and Rue de Grenelle in the sixth arrondissement are renowned for top quality leather goods so if bags, belts or shoes are what you need, these are the areas to visit.
Taking a trip to a Parisian flea market is an authentic way to pick up unique pieces and bargains. Paris has three main flea markets, all boasting an array of items to choose from.
The sprawling Marché aux Puces de Clignancourt is the jewel in the crown of Parisian flea markets and has an unrivalled abundance of bric-a-brac and genuine design classics.
The other major markets are found at the tree lined Porte de Vanves in the 14th arrondissement and Porte de Montreuil which lies in the 20th arrondissement.
Paris city breaks during January give you the benefit of annual sales. The highly regarded annual Colette sale begins mid-January and is ever popular since this famous upscale department store stocks the most fashionable clothing brands. Many other famous shops also hold their annual sales during January.
